Basketball Play - Weak Side Pindown

Weak Side Pindown

John Leonzo 05/01/2013

Here is a great quick hitter that can be run right out of transition that Iowa State used numerous times throughout this past season. The quick hitter is tremendous because it flows right out of transition and seeks to put the ball in the hands of your best players (2 and 5) multiple times. Also, this play creates great spacing for your trail man (5 in this play) to get the ball in an isolation scenario if the other options are not available. See More

Basketball Play - Back

Back

John Leonzo 05/19/2013

Here is a box set that gives you a an opportunity to take advantage of a mis-match by going to an ISO for 1 on the weak side attacking off the flat ball screen or to throw back to 3 for a three point shot. This is an effective quick hitter to take advantage of various matchups or to get a quality shot quick in an end of clock situation. See More

Basketball Play - Back

Back

John Leonzo 06/11/2013

Here is a set that Butler ran often for Gordon Hayward (3 in this set) to get him an ISO opportunity on his favorite side of the court. 2 cutting hard off of the stagger screen is essential so that x3 helps, giving 5 a great opportunity and angle to flare 3 out to the wing. Misdirection feel of this play by having all of the action go to the weak side up until the point of the flare from 5 also helps make this an effective set. See More

Basketball Play - Back Reverse

Back Reverse

John Leonzo 06/21/2013

Here is a set play that Bucknell ran in the NCAA tournament this year against Butler. This is a counter to a similar action that they ran earlier in the same game. In the previous play 2 would cut to the corner opposite the ball and 1 would hit 3 on the wing for an ISO. In this counter 2 stops his cut under the basket and pops to the top of the key for a catch and shoot opportunity. This is an effective set when coupled with the previously described play. This is a great misdirection quick hitter! See More

Basketball Play - 2 Down

2 Down

John Leonzo 07/22/2013

Here is a set play that can be run for continuity with a stagger screen going on each time it is run. This is a great play to get a 3 point play for your 3 man, but it can be an even more effective ISO for 2 if the ball is thrown to him as he pulls across the lane. Because of the stagger going on the opposite side of the floor, the help side should be occupied and 2 can have a good chance to attack and create. Another option that could be open is 4 slipping to the basket after setting his top part of the stagger screen. If his man hedges hard to help on 3 popping to the wing, you could have a good look at 4 slipping to the basket. See More

Basketball Play - Pacer 1-4 High Set

Pacer 1-4 High Set

Kevin Bruinsma 06/14/2013

This is a set the Indiana Pacers ran against the Miami Heat in the 2013 Eastern Conference Finals. Looking to get their marquee player, Paul George a isolated post/wing catch the Pacers sent #24 George to the opposite side of the court before coming back hard to the ball on the reversal for deep post position. If #24 George couldn't catch the ball deep he moved out to the mid-wing area for a catch. This is where Indiana ran a great alternative action to get an even deeper post touch. #50 Tyler Hansbrough after entering the ball to George comes down the lane and sets a screen for #55 Roy Hibbert right in the middle of the lane, who now gets a deep post catch right in the middle of the paint. Basketball Play - Heat SLOB Elbow Catches

Heat SLOB Elbow Catches

Kevin Bruinsma 06/26/2013

The Miami Heat do a fantastic job of getting the ball to the elbow in pressure/clutch situations. Here are two plays the Heat ran against the Indiana Pacers in the ECF from the Sideline out of bounds to get elbow catches. One entry turns into their most successful play the FT Line Back Screen two man game between Wade & Bosh with Lebron having the ball. The other set was how Miami won G1 as Lebron had an isolation from the elbow. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Late Clock 3/4 Court

Spurs Late Clock 3/4 Court

Kevin Bruinsma 07/04/2013

Here is the set the San Antonio Spurs ran in Game 5 against the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. Having only 5 seconds to go 3/4 court on the sideline the Spurs went with a small line up. They put #9 Tony Parker at midcourt, and had #14 Gary Neal run off him first, and then #20 Manu Ginobili. With him setting two screens he was able to pop back to the ball and have a full court iso. Basketball Play - Spurs SLOB Bearcat

Spurs SLOB Bearcat

Kevin Bruinsma 07/05/2013

A common San Antonio Spurs SLOB which didn't translate into many points against the Miami Heat. But the amount they ran it made me think they must have had good success with this action during the season. They utilized these back screens to get #21 Tim Duncan a post iso. The only hoop they got on this action against Miami was a #2 Kawhi Leonard 3 from the top of the key. See More

Basketball Play - Valpo Pick & Roll

Valpo Pick & Roll

Kevin Bruinsma 01/31/2015

In a marquee Horizon League match-up earlier in the year Valparaiso made the trip to face Oakland. Trailing with under two minutes left in the game Valpo turned to a pick & roll action with movement out of both corners to occupy the low man away who traditionally covers the rim. By rolling up #25 Peters on the ball side it forced the Oakland defender to follow up, making the back side defenders sink in the middle. The pin down screen and space kept those defenders in defending action as opposed to getting into gaps. All of the movement out of both corners confused Oakland and led to a huge basket for Valpo. Basketball Play - Oakland Overload

Oakland Overload

Kevin Bruinsma 02/10/2015

Oakland has made a commitment this season to throwing the ball in to the post to one of the best centers in the league #42 Corey Petros. Their offense has evolved from a dribble drive offense with moments of the Dick Bennett “Movers & Blockers” offense which we actually ran a bit during my time at Portland. Valparaiso has always doubled big to big on post entries so Oakland must have added a play to their arsenal before playing this game. The irony of it is they took the play from Valpo who has been running the overload play for years and added one wrinkle. With the guards cleaning out it opens up the over top lob pass for the 5 if they front. With the flare screen for the 1 it puts the PG as the only back side help and he is guarding the flare cut. When the ball goes into #42 Petros the 4 man #4 Hayes dives right to the rim as his man doubles the center. The only person on that side of the floor available to help is the point guard who is no match-up for a 6’8 power forward. See More

Basketball Play - Duke On-Ball Back Screen

Duke On-Ball Back Screen

Kevin Bruinsma 04/24/2015

Duke ran this play to free up Winslow going to the rim and once the ball is reversed it turns into a post iso for him. Okafor screws the play up by not moving to the weak side block, but Duke ends up getting a basket on a post move from Winslow. If Okafor would have slid over to the opposite block and ducked his man in, Winslow would have had a lob dunk after the back screen from the point guard. See More

Basketball Play - UNC M-M BLOB

UNC M-M BLOB

Kevin Bruinsma 05/20/2016

Down by six with 90 seconds left in the National Championship game North Carolina ran a quick hit baseline out of bounds play to get their best player #5 Paige an open 3-point look in the corner. He hit the shot and in a blink of an eye it went back to a one possession game. What I like about this Baseline out of bounds play is that it has a few options to get a lay-up that went un-noticed because Paige ended up hitting the 3 in the corner. The first action is the back screen set for the point guard to cut right to the rim for a quick entry pass and score. The second you don’t really see in the video due to the ball not reversing. If the pass would have been made to the top of the key to the 3 man who had set the back screen for 1, then 1 would have set a cross screen for the 5 man who had just set the screen to free up Paige for the shot. This put’s the 5’s defender in a really tough spot having to show or help on Paige then get screened going back the opposite way to an entire side cleared out for a post iso. See More
